It wouldn’t be right to let his time of year pass without taking a a minute or two to remark on what a bargain tulips are for the spring garden. A small amount of effort in the autumn can produce amazing results in the spring – even in areas where the light is not perfect.
This year we experimented with more peony style tulips and they have been spectacular – producing masses of rose and peony type blooms in the most heavenly range of colours. Two of our favourites have been Tulipa Negrita, a lovely, deep pink/purple frilly double flower and Tulipa Mount Tacoma – with huge creamy soft white, double blooms. We took these photographs after a particularly stormy night which these lovely things have stood up to. Such a great reminder that an afternoon of bulb planting in the autumn is always time well spent.
