Southbank Rooftop Oasis

I popped along to have a look at the Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden at the weekend…my advice is thus: If the sun is out…wait what am I saying…if it’s not raining and you can stand outside without wearing a coat – take a long lunch break, organise a meeting with yourself or just take a detour on your way home and go kick your shoes off.

Amongst the usual buzz of Southbank you will find a large lush lawn, mini wildflower meadows, grass benches, fruit trees and a thriving vegetable patch equipped with a scarecrow. They are even making honey on the roof of the Royal Festival Hall.

A collaboration between Southbank Centre and the Eden Project in Cornwall, it was built last year by the Grounded Gardening team run by PRHA for The Festival of Britain. After it’s popularity it was developed again this year for Southbank’s Festival of the World. They are growing veg from around the world including blue potatoes and narga peppers. The long-term aim is to add more greenery to the site’s concrete exterior.
